The new type of BIOS called an Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI) makes the transition from an older keyboard driven environment to something so much more appealing and easier to use.






NVIDIA rebrand GeForce 210 to GeForce 310 specification

NVIDIA has added the first graphics chipset to its GeForce 300 series. The GeForce 310 is a direct replacement for the earlier 210 and (andf thus a rename), like its predecessor, is meant as a basic GPU to upgrade the performance of systems that are limited to slower integrated graphics. It has just a 64-bit memory bus and just 16 processing cores but can still fully accelerate 1080p video in hardware and provide general-purpose computing tasks, whether it's NVIDIA's own CUDA and PhysX or more universal standards like DirectCompute and OpenCL.
In spite of its GeForce 300 series name, the card is believed to be based on current architecture rather than the Fermi design, which will add DirectX 11-level graphics and much stronger general computing performance.
The part normally runs with a 589MHz main clock and carries 512MB of DDR2 memory that runs at 500MHz. Despite its budget focus, a reference board carries DisplayPort, DVI and VGA connectors and will work with HDMI through an adapter for either the DisplayPort or DVI links. NVIDIA hasn't said when it expects cards to be out on the market or detailed full operating system support, though the GeForce 310 like the 210 before it is likely destined for pre-built computers more than as a stand-alone upgrade.

The USB 3.0 Promoter Group announced on November 17, 2008, that version 3.0 of the specification had been completed and was transitioned to the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF), the managing body of USB specifications. This move effectively opened the spec to hardware developers for implementation in future products. The first USB 3.0 ports were featured on the Asus P6X58 motherboard; however this board was canceled before production.Features
* A new major feature is the SuperSpeed bus, which provides a fourth transfer mode at 4.8 Gbit/s. The raw throughput is 4 Gbit/s, and the specification considers it reasonable to achieve 3.2 Gbit/s (0.4 GByte/s or 400 MByte/s) or more after protocol overhead.
* When operating in SuperSpeed mode, full-duplex signaling occurs over 2 differential pairs separate from the non-SuperSpeed differential pair. This results in USB 3.0 cables containing 2 wires for power and ground, 2 wires for non-SuperSpeed data, and 4 wires for SuperSpeed data, and a shield (not required in previous specifications).

* USB 3.0 extends the bulk transfer type in SuperSpeed with Streams. This extension allows a host and device to create and transfer multiple streams of data through a single bulk pipe.
* New power management features include support of idle, sleep and suspend states, as well as Link-, Device-, and Function-level power management.
* The bus power spec has been increased so that a unit load is 150 mA (+50% over minimum using USB 2.0). An unconfigured device can still draw only 1 unit load, but a configured device can draw up to 6 unit loads (900 mA, an 80% increase over USB 2.0 at a registered maximum of 500 mA). Minimum device operating voltage is dropped from 4.4 V to 4 V.
* USB 3.0 does not define cable assembly lengths, except that it can be of any length as long as it meets all the requirements defined in the specification. However, electronicdesign.com estimates cables will be limited to 3 m at SuperSpeed.
* Technology is similar to a single channel (1x) of PCI Express 2.0 (5-Gbit/s). It uses 8B/10B encoding, linear feedback shift register (LFSR) scrambling for data and spread spectrum. It forces receivers to use low frequency periodic signaling (LFPS), dynamic equalization, and training sequences to ensure fast signal locking.

NVIDIA Fermi for supercomputers Specification

NVIDIA introduced new Fermi based solutions for supercomputing at SC09 in Portland, Oregon. It's only an announcement though, the real hardware won't be available until Q2 2010. Additionally, the GPU maker also confirms that GeForce products based on Fermi will be available in Q1 2010. 

The family of Tesla 20-series GPUs includes:
* Tesla C2050 & C2070 GPU Computing Processors
o Single GPU PCI-Express Gen-2 cards for workstation configurations
o Up to 3GB and 6GB (respectively) on-board GDDR5 memory
o Double precision performance in the range of 520GFlops - 630 GFlops * Tesla S2050 & S2070 GPU Computing Systems

Flash Player 10.1 USE GPU Hardware Acceleration

California-based Advanced Micro Devices has just revealed that the recently-announced Adobe Flash Player 10.1 beta will be supported by platforms powered by Vision Technology from AMD. The latest installment of Adobe's Flash Player takes advantage of the benefits and features that are enabled through AMD's ATI Stream technology, providing an improved video playback, reduced CPU utilization and longer battery life through the combination of using the resources available from both the CPU and the GPU.

“AMD and Adobe have collaborated to enable ATI Stream technology through Adobe Flash Player 10.1 to help end users more easily experience , create and share their visual media,” said Rick Bergman, senior vice president of AMD’s Products Group. “Adobe Flash Player is one of the world's most pervasive multimedia platforms and the number one video platform on the web today. By taking advantage of both the CPU and GPU resources available on AMD platforms, the new player delivers video that looks and performs better than ever before.”

Expected to become available through Adobe starting the first half of 2010, the new Flash Player 10.1 targets the standard DXVA APIs in Windows, taking advantage of the available hardware acceleration from supported AMD products. The list of notebook and desktop platforms that will support the acceleration of Flash Player 10.1 include ATI's Radeon HD 4000, HD 5700 and HD 5800 series of graphics cards, Mobility Radeon HD 4000 series (and higher), Radeon HD 3000 integrated graphics (and higher) and the ATI FirePro V3750, V5700, V7750, V8700 and V8750 graphics accelerators.

“AMD has been at the forefront of utilizing both the CPU and GPU on x86-based platforms to improve the performance of popular runtimes like the new Adobe Flash Player 10.1,” said David Wadhwani, general manager and vice president, Platform Business Unit at Adobe. “Consumers will be able to enjoy a smooth viewing experience when accessing rich, HD video content built with the Adobe Flash Platform on AMD based Windows PCs.”

Nintendo's Wii sees a return to form after being topped by the PlayStation 3 in September, and it's price cut to $199 USD certainly helped.  The competing PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 platforms already saw their boost in sales thanks to similar reductions in price, though NPD's Anita Frazier notes that their momentum did not end up carrying over into October.

Nvidia Geforce 9500 GT
