Firefox 4 Beta 4 support 2D acceleration

The fourth beta of Firefox 4 will be hitting on Monday, and notable will be the inclusion of hardware acceleration for Windows users that have the hardware and software to support Direct2D.

Firefox using your GPU to render won't be on by default – at least not yet. Mozilla's VP of engineering tweeted that Direct2D will be included in beta 4, but it isn't quite ready for everyone to be running it yet. Instead, the feature will be enabled through user intervention by modifying the config.

To turn on Direct2D: Go in to about:config and set mozilla.widget.render-mode to 6, and gfx.font_rendering.directwrite.enabled to true. 

D2D status:

• Direct2D is not turned on by default for Firefox 4 beta 4. (We weren't confident enough to turn it on for all users.)
• However, all the code in Firefox 4 beta 4, and it should work reasonably well for everyone.
• We really need testers, both on the beta and on nightlies. (We plan to enable Direct2D in nightlies as soon as beta 4 is tagged and branched.)

• To turn on Direct2D: Go in to about:config and set mozilla.widget.render-mode to 6, and gfx.font_rendering.directwrite.enabled to true.
• To turn off Direct2D, once it is on by default, set mozilla.widget.render-mode to 0.
• To check whether you are running with Direct2D, go to about:support and look at the bottom. (Once bug 586046 lands, there will be even more information about your graphics card in there.)
• Please look out for memory usage, rendering speed, and any rendering problems you might see. Also focus on interactions with plugins like Flash.

Crysis 2 is an upcoming first-person shooter video game developed by Crytek and published by Electronic Arts, due for release on Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 in March 2011. It is the sequel to the 2007 video game Crysis and its parallel expansion game, Crysis Warhead. 

The story was written by author Richard Morgan.It will be the first game to showcase the CryEngine 3 development engine.

Intel's upcoming LGA-2011 processor stocket picture

JCornell from Xtreme Systems has released two photos of the new LGA 2011 processor stocket .  

This will fit the Intel's 32 nm technology for the manufacture of Sandy Bridge processors , which is dated for2011. 

Published two pictures of the installation stocket of two levers, which the processor is locked firmly in position. The new LGA 2011 strain is presumably compatible with current Core i7 900-series LGA-1366 processors .

ATI Southern Islands for HD6000 series launches date

Some reports over the net say that the next  ATI Southern Islands launches is in October 2010 witch will support the next HD6000 series.

Southern Islands is the family codename for the 6000 series graphics cards whereas Evergreen was the codename for Radeon series 5000. AMD / ATI always launches with their most high-end product, so we expect the same here.
ATI’s next-generation family includes chips code-named Cozumel, Ibiza and Kauai chips, which are actually .. southern islands.
These new chips will still be made on a 40nm process because TSMC decided to skip 32nm for GPUs and advanced directly to 28nm. Moreover, the site also notes that AMD will cut prices of its Radeon HD 5000 series to defend its marketshare.
To defend its market share, AMD plans to cut prices for its ATI Radeon HD 5000-series GPUs in the near future. The action also serves as preparation for the upcoming Southern Islands GPUs, the sources noted.
AMD originally planned to have its next-generation GPUs using 32nm process and codenamed the chips Northern Islands, but Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) skipped its 32nm R&D for GPUs and advanced directly to 28nm R&D. In response AMD adjusted its plans and decided to continue adopting a 40nm process, while changing the product's codename to Southern Islands, the sources explained.

Over guru3d and from a Germany based tech site Computer Base seems to have their hands on a  Intel's 32nm Sandy Bridge Core i7/i5/i3 2000 roadmap for the desktop and notebook market and with a suffix to identify special features of the processor, the "K" for unlocked chips, "S" for energy-efficient versions, "T" for dual-core 35W TDP models, "M" for laptop processors, "QM" for quad-core laptop CPUs and "XM" for the fastest laptop chips.

AMD Phenom II X6 1075T and X4 970 Specifications

New family of AMD Phenom II X6 and X4 processor reported on xbit website on the 21st of September, 2010.

The two key processors set to be announced are AMD Phenom II X6 1075T (3.0GHz/3.50GHz TurboCore with 9MB of cache) and AMD Phenom II X4 970 (3.50GHz, 8MB of cache).

The first will cost in the range between $230 - $240 and will broaden the line of code-named Thuban microprocessors, whereas the second will be AMD's fastest quad-core microprocessor with the price tag that is likely to be below $200.

Considering the fact that TurboCore clock-speed of the six-core model 1075T will be 3.50GHz, the difference in price between it and the quad-core Phenom II X4 970 should be considerable as the chips have equal performance in applications that require up to four threads (in order to avoid internal competition between six-core and quad-core products).

Mafia II Demo framerate problem fixed

NVIDIA have now posted an updated PhysX System Software "PhysX fix - PhysX System Software 9.10.0513" which fixes  the low framerate problem.


2K is also working on an auto-update patch for the demo, which comes via Steam and which should be available shortly too.
