Nvidia introduced at GDC 2012 couple of video showing an impressive realtime dynamic solid destruction using physics technology, make a solid object pre-fractured into pieces multiple times
In this video we show our new destruction prototype. Here, objects are fractured on the fly. There is no limit of how many times pieces can be fractured. Also, the fracture pattern depends on the impact location.
They announce that they use a GRBs - GPU accelerated rigid boides with an Nvidia Geforce GTX 480 running the fracture scenes in real time at about 50-60 fps, an arbitrary meshes real-time scene is coming.
